Why We Don’t Do Christmas Gifts with Our Kids

Christmas is a beautiful, meaningful day in our home, but it looks a little different than what you might expect. We don’t focus on buying or exchanging gifts with our kids. Instead, we’ve chosen to center this special season on what matters most: creating memories, building traditions, and experiencing joy together—not through things, but through moments.
Recently, while waiting for an appointment, I overheard a woman talking about how stressed she was trying to figure out the perfect gift for someone close to her. The weight in her voice was undeniable, and it made me pause.
How did a season meant for connection and celebration turn into one of stress, long store lines, and pressure to buy things we often don’t need? Somewhere along the way, the joy of Christmas has been overshadowed by consumerism.
That’s why we’ve made the decision not to do Christmas gifts. There’s no mad dash to wrap presents, no chaotic gift-opening session. Instead, we focus on what we want our kids to carry with them as they grow: traditions that bring peace, not pressure, and memories that spark joy, not stress.
Now, don’t get me wrong—I love giving gifts and the thoughtfulness behind them. But I refuse to let cultural expectations dictate how we celebrate such a sacred day. We’ve chosen to step away from the commercialized version of Christmas and instead embrace a simpler, more meaningful approach.
Our traditions are built on what matters most to us—snuggling together to watch movies, baking cookies, playing games, and soaking in the gift of family time. These are the moments we want our kids to remember.

But this isn’t just about Christmas. It’s about living life intentionally all year round, focusing on what truly brings joy and meaning. Whether your family loves opening gifts on Christmas morning or creating unique traditions, what matters is that those choices reflect your values—not what society says you should do.
